I Paid more than R60,000 for a Website—Then I Discovered I Could Build My Own Shopify Store

When I first needed a professional website, I did what many new business owners believe they are supposed to do: I hired a web developer.
By the time the website was completed, I had paid more than R60,000.
At the time, I assumed that creating a professional online presence had to be expensive. I believed that building a website required technical knowledge, complicated coding and a professional developer handling everything behind the scenes.
My experience with Shopify has completely changed that belief.
Today, I know that many small-business owners, creators and aspiring entrepreneurs can build their own professional online stores without paying enormous upfront development fees.
The Real Cost Was More Than R60,000
The financial cost was significant, but that was not the only issue.
When someone else builds your website, you may also become dependent on that person whenever you want to make a change.
You might need help to:
- Replace an image
- Add a new product
- Change your homepage layout
- Create a new collection
- Update a page
- Add a promotion
- Fix something that is not displaying correctly
Even a small change can turn into another email, another delay and sometimes another invoice.
That can be frustrating when the website represents your business, your ideas and your brand.
You should be able to adjust it as your business develops—not feel afraid to touch it because you do not understand how it works.
Shopify Gave Me More Control
Shopify works differently from paying a developer a large amount upfront to create a completely custom website.
You can choose a Shopify subscription plan and pay on a recurring basis rather than beginning with a development bill of tens of thousands of rand. Shopify currently offers monthly and annual billing options, with the features and charges depending on the plan you select.
More importantly, Shopify is designed to make it possible for many business owners to build and manage their own stores, even without extensive technical experience
Shopify provides customisable themes, drag-and-drop editing tools and a website builder designed for people without coding or technical experience.
That does not mean there is nothing to learn.
I had to work through the setup, understand the sections, organise my collections and experiment with the design. There were moments when I became frustrated or could not immediately find the correct setting.
But I was learning how to control my own business.
Every time I solved something, I became less dependent on someone else.
You Can Make the Store Look Like Your Brand
One of my favourite things about building with Shopify is the ability to shape the store around your own vision.
You can choose:
- Your brand colours
- Your fonts
- Your homepage images
- Your product collections
- Your menus
- Your written content
- Your buttons and calls to action
- The overall feeling of your store
You are not simply handed a finished website and expected to accept someone else’s interpretation of your brand.
You can continue improving it as you learn more about your customers.
Your first design does not have to be perfect. You can start with something clean and professional, then update it as your business grows.
That flexibility is valuable because most new businesses change considerably during their first year.
Stop Believing You Need a Huge Budget to Begin
Many people postpone starting an online business because they think they need a large amount of money before they can launch.
They wait until they can afford a designer, a developer, professional photography, expensive branding and every possible feature.
But waiting for everything to be perfect can prevent you from ever starting.
A Shopify store gives you the opportunity to begin with what you have, learn how the platform works and improve your business gradually.
Instead of spending most of your budget before you have made your first sale, you can focus your money and energy on the areas that directly help you grow, such as:
- Finding the right products
- Creating useful content
- Understanding your audience
- Improving your product descriptions
- Building Pinterest and social-media traffic
- Learning basic SEO
- Testing what customers respond to
A beautiful website matters, but a beautiful website without traffic, trust or a clear purpose will not automatically create sales.
Shopify Is Not Completely Free
I also want to be realistic.
Building the store yourself does not mean there will never be additional costs.
Depending on what you choose, you may still pay for:
- Your Shopify subscription
- A custom domain
- Optional premium themes
- Paid apps
- Payment or transaction-related fees
- Photography, branding or specialist assistance
Shopify’s plans include a website builder and hosting, while some additional services and apps can carry separate charges.
The difference is that you have more control over which costs you accept.
You can start simply, use a free theme and add paid features only when they serve a genuine business purpose.
That is very different from paying nearly R60,000 before you have even tested whether your idea will work.
Does This Mean You Should Never Hire a Developer?
No.
A professional developer can be extremely valuable when a business needs advanced functionality, custom coding, complex integrations or a completely bespoke customer experience.
Established businesses may also prefer to pay an expert because their time is more valuable elsewhere.
But many beginners do not need a highly customised website on day one.
They need a clean, trustworthy store that works properly, looks good on mobile devices and allows customers to understand what they are offering.
For that type of business, Shopify can make starting far more accessible.
You can also build most of the store yourself and pay for specialised help only when you genuinely need it.
What I Would Do Differently Today
Knowing what I know now, I would not immediately spend close to R60,000 on website development.
I would begin by:
- Clearly defining what I want to sell.
- Choosing a simple Shopify theme.
- Creating a basic but professional brand identity.
- Building my essential pages and collections.
- Testing the store on a mobile phone.
- Publishing useful content that attracts the right audience.
- Improving the store gradually based on real visitor behaviour.
Most importantly, I would learn how my own website works.
That knowledge gives you independence.
You do not have to contact someone every time you want to change an image, add a product or try a new business idea.
Your Store Does Not Need to Be Perfect to Start
The biggest lesson I have learned is that starting matters more than creating the perfect website.
You can learn.
You can make changes.
You can improve the design.
You can rewrite your content.
You can remove products that no longer suit your brand and add better ones as your direction becomes clearer.
Your online store can grow with you.
So, before paying enormous website-development costs, explore what you may be able to build yourself.
You could be far more capable than you realise.
